Tunnel Long Distance Dedicated Voltage Regulator

Tunnel long distance dedicated voltage regulator is a special voltage stabilizer for underground coal mine tunnel long-distance power supply systems. It provides stable and continuous power for powering heavy electrical equipment such as shotcrete machines, transport pumps, air compressors, blowers and crushers. It greatly improves the continuous stability of power voltage regulation, and is well received by tunnel construction units and mining enterprises.

In coal mines, there are many underground power supply lines to supply equipment and lighting in the mining face. These cables are prone to voltage drop due to their length and the distance between the power supply source and equipment at the mining face. This voltage drop leads to difficulties in motor startup, reduced actual power factor and even power supply accidents. To overcome this problem, existing solutions either increase the output voltage of mobile transformers or add a compensating voltage regulator at the middle of the cable line to perform secondary voltage step-up. These methods expose cables and electrical equipment to prolonged high-voltage hazards, increase energy loss and shorten their service life.

Therefore, it is necessary to develop a voltage regulator with low dropout, high quiescent current, and good transient response. This article introduces a new voltage regulator circuit that uses the bi-directional characteristics of a tunnel diode and a Zener diode as reference devices for regulating the power supply. The voltage of the reference device is applied to a switching transistor in series with an unregulated voltage supply, and the output current of the transistor controls another transistor that regulates the voltage of the load.

To reduce the impact of VESR, the circuit is designed to use bypass capacitors with a large value and a low ESR value. However, since the VESR effect is not proportional to the voltage variation of the load, it requires a large value of the bypass capacitor for stabilizing the output voltage. Nevertheless, the design of this circuit is easy to implement and does not require complicated circuitry.

As a result, the new voltage regulator circuit has a small footprint and high reliability. It can be easily integrated into various applications and is compatible with different power supplies. The new circuit also exhibits better transient performance, which is critical for ensuring the safety of mine equipment.
