Reactance also shifts the resonant frequency of the system away from the fundamental multiples, which allows the capacitor to suppress harmonics.
During the design process of the Daya Bay nuclear power plant, Powerside was asked to modify a multiple PowerVar capacitor bank to improve the power factor and reduce harmonics. After performing a harmonic analysis, it was determined that the capacitors were susceptible to harmonic resonance at certain multiples of the fundamental frequency. To prevent this, Powerside installed detuned reactors in series with the capacitor bank to transform it into a shunt filter and avoid amplifying harmonics and causing resonance. The result was a significant improvement in the power factor and reduced harmonics without inciting resonance. Powerside has since been requested to perform this same design on many other sites, including the Hualong 1 reactor.
